Mr Gordon Akrugu is the Treasurer of the SBA Oware Society Ghana and a master player. He was born in 1982 in Sherigu, suburb of Bolgatanga in the Upper East region of Ghana. He was attracted to the game by watching adult players. This led him to start playing competitively at the age of 15. His mentor was Abizaghere (a foreman at AGC Obuasi). It took another 15 years for him to become a master player.
In 2007, he was Ashanti regional champion in a tournament organised under the auspices of Otumfour Osei Tutu II. Again, in 2009, he became the champion in a similar tournament organised once again under the auspices of Otumfour Osei Tutu II.
The story was not different in 2012 when Kordie district in the Ashanti region organised a similar tournament to celebrate Kordie @50 and Mr Akrugu participated and won as champion. He subsequently returned to Bolgatanga and fully participated in the regional championship and won.
He had his international debut in at the III World Nomad Games in Cholpon-ATA 2018 Kyrgyzstan Central Asia, after wining the Kumasi Playing Grounds Oware Championship in 2017. Representing Ghana he placed 3rd in the Grandmasters Oware Championship and 8th the in the 3 WNG Oware Tournament. In 2019 he once again represented Ghana at the international Nomad Universe - Ethno Festival Oware Championship in Saudi Arabia. He placed in 2nd the position in this tournament. In 2024 he represented Ghana once more at the VI World Nomad Games Astana 2024 in Kazakhstan . Once again he placed in the 2nd silver medal position.
